Terrortory: The seed left behind

02/03/12  ||  Smalley

“Terrortory”…? Urgh, please leave the metal puns up to Exodus only. And this debut is called “The seed left behind”?? I ain’t touchin that one… in more ways than one. Anyway, like I said, “seed” is the debut from these Swede deathrashers (now Death Rash, that’s a band name), or, at least they’re deathrash for the most part… the opening track here sounds a LOT more like pure Dark Tranquility/Insomnium-influenced Gothenburg metal to me. But, it does start off well enough with a cool, calm (though eerie) piano intro, but once the actual metal starts, it disappoints with an oddly-rusty, inadequate harsh guitar tone, generic clean guitar, and weak, somewhat-whiny growling. The solos aren’t anything to write home about either, and the opener starts to wander aimlessly songwriting-wise.

Then the next track starts up with the deathdiaperash material, with more focus, energy, and catchiness than that melo opener, and the rest of the tracks here follow suit in that style but the weak growling/production still sabotages the overall affair. It’s not that tory doesn’t have some good riffs/musical ideas, it’s just that certain sound probs prevent them from being consistently enjoyable.

6/10: this isn’t without some obvious potential though, so don’t give up on ‘em yet (just give up on that fucken name).
